TACKLING THE CHALLENGE OF PET MANAGEMENT BY FOSTERING A TRUSTED COMMUNITY

The Petzo app is crafted to be a central hub for pet care, offering features such as easy connection to service providers, management of pets' health records and vaccinations, task reminders, and a community space for pet lovers to connect and share. It streamlines volunteer activities with registration features, facilitates the sharing of pet care responsibilities, and keeps pet owners engaged and informed with updates about their pets.

OVERVIEW

Pioneering a New Era for Pet Enthusiasts

6 Weeks

Duration In 2021

Embarking on the Petzo project was a solitary, six-week journey of meticulous design and user empathy. I delved deep into understanding the pet owner’s world, developing user personas, and mapping out customer journeys. Each persona was a narrative, each journey mapped a step closer to the core of user needs.

I navigated every stage of the design process, from storyboards that brought my visions to life to the crafting of wireframes and the final design. This solo expedition was driven by a commitment to innovation and a deep-seated passion for revolutionizing pet care.

The completion of the Petzo app design process marked the culmination of intensive research and development. With each iteration, informed by user feedback, the app's features were refined to ensure intuitive navigation and a seamless user experience, achieving a solution that addresses the practical needs of pet management in a digital age.

What solutions can streamline the pet-keeping experience for the community?

PROBLEM

Untangling Pet Ownership Complexities

Securing Trustworthy Pet Sitters.

A prevalent issue for pet owners is the uncertainty and discomfort that comes with finding someone reliable to care for their pets. The absence of a verifiable trust system for pet sitters leaves owners anxious about the well-being of their pets when they cannot be there themselves.

Struggling to Keep Up with Pet Care Schedules.

Pet owners often struggle with keeping track of their pets' numerous care-related appointments and activities. This disorganization can lead to missed veterinary visits or a lack of social interaction for the pets, resulting in potential health and welfare concerns.

The survey responses from pet owners revealed a common narrative of concern centered around the fragmentation of pet care management. They felt overwhelmed by the cumbersome task of tracking their pets’ health records, vaccinations, and appointments, indicating a significant need for a centralized system to streamline these responsibilities. Feedback from volunteers in the pet care domain highlighted their desire for a platform that would allow them to connect with pet owners in need of their services. They emphasized the importance of building a trusted reputation within the local community and voiced frustrations over the lack of opportunities to demonstrate their reliability and skill in pet care.

Advait (Pet Owner)

"It's so tough to find a temporary home for my pet that I can trust, especially at short notice."

Rutuja (Pet Owner)

"I need a way to ensure that my pet's medical records are kept up to date and in one place it's currently all over the place."

Sayali (Volunteer)

"I wish there was an easier way to show pet owners my experience with pets so they'd feel comfortable leaving their pets with me."

Harsh (Volunteer)

"Getting updates and staying in the loop with local pet-related events is a hassle there's got to be a better way to connect with the pet community."

USER PERSONAS

For pet owners, the persona encapsulated the challenges faced in managing a pet's daily routine, particularly when life's obligations required them to be away from home. The persona revealed the necessity for reliable pet care solutions that ensure the well-being of their pets in their absence, reflecting concerns about the trustworthiness and competence of pet sitters. Volunteer personas highlighted the aspirations of individuals eager to connect with pet owners. They expressed a desire to be part of a community where their love for animals could be shared and utilized in meaningful ways. However, they also faced obstacles in proving their credibility and finding opportunities to care for pets, underscoring the need for a platform that could showcase their qualifications and connect them with pet owners.

USER JOURNEY MAP

The user journey maps for Petzo revealed in-depth insights into the user experience for both pet owners and volunteers. For pet owners, the maps showed that leaving pets with a caretaker was often fraught with worry, stemming from uncertainty about the pet's well-being and the caretaker's reliability. On the other hand, volunteers faced challenges in establishing trust with owners. They needed a way to authentically showcase their qualifications and genuine passion for pet care. These findings were crucial in pinpointing where the Petzo app needed to focus to alleviate these concerns and streamline the experience for all users.

SOLUTION

Simplifying Pet Care for Everyone

STORYBOARDING

Storyboarding was an instrumental technique in the development of Petzo's gamification features. Through visual narratives, I was able to explore and iterate on how completing pet care tasks could be both engaging and rewarding. This process led to the creation of a points system that not only motivates pet sitters to perform daily pet care routines but also provides real-time feedback and gratification by sharing these moments with pet owners. Storyboarding allowed these ideas to be fleshed out in a way that ensured they would enrich the user experience.

SOLUTION 1

Gamification Insights

Task Engagement with Assurance for Owners

Petzo’s gamified system isn’t just about collecting points; it’s a comprehensive feature that encourages pet sitters to engage with daily pet care activities. By completing tasks like feeding or walking at specified times and sending photo evidence to pet owners, sitters can earn points. This system not only incentivizes good practices but also provides pet owners with a reassuring window into their pet's day.

SOLUTION 2

Coordinated Care

Track & Share Health Records and Care Schedules

This feature goes beyond tracking a pet’s diet and vaccinations. It's designed to keep up with the pet's daily schedule, such as feeding times and walks, which can be shared with pet sitters, ensuring they are fully informed and can maintain the pet's routine, reinforcing consistency in pet care.

SOLUTION 3

Community Connect

Where Pet Lovers Unite, Share, and Shop

Community Interaction & Resource Sharing: The third key feature is a robust social platform within Petzo that not only connects pet owners but also serves as a hub for sharing valuable resources. It's a space where users can exchange tips, coordinate pet-related events, and access an in-app marketplace for pet services. This feature is designed to foster a sense of community and support among pet enthusiasts, creating a network where advice, services, and experiences can be shared to enhance the overall quality of pet care.

LEARNINGS

Simplifying Life for Humans and Pets Alike

It wasn't merely about designing for pet owners and lovers; it was about immersing myself in their world. It taught me to view design from their perspective, to feel their joys and concerns, and to create an experience that resonated deeply with their needs. This connection with the users became the guiding light of the project, ensuring that every element of the Petzo app was infused with care and understanding.

It has not only sharpened my UI/UX skills but also instilled in me the core principles of empathy, continuous improvement, and the art of creating meaningful user experiences.

Petzo underscored the importance of pet well-being in experience design.
